Liposuction removes fat, but it can’t make skin shrink to fit a slimmer shape. That part depends on how well your skin bounces back, which is the least predictable piece of any body contouring procedure. Renuvion gives the skin a better chance. At ShineMD Plastic Surgery in Houston, Dr. Janak Parikh, MD FACS, includes Renuvion with liposuction to tighten skin from beneath the surface for the smoothest result your anatomy allows.
Renuvion is a skin tightening treatment that works under the skin rather than on top of it. A thin handpiece delivers helium plasma together with radiofrequency energy to the tissue layer just below the skin. That energy gently heats the collagen and the fibrous bands that support the skin, and heated collagen contracts. The result is a tightening effect that begins right away and can continue to improve as the body builds new collagen during healing. Renuvion is FDA cleared for use after liposuction, and it is the only device with that specific clearance.
That pairing is the point. Liposuction removes fat, and Renuvion addresses the loose skin that fat removal can leave behind. It is best suited to mild to moderate skin looseness. Patients with a large amount of excess skin usually need a procedure that removes skin, such as a tummy tuck, and Dr. Parikh will discuss that during your consultation if it applies to you.
Dr. Parikh includes Renuvion with liposuction to give patients the best possible result. The two treatments complement each other. Liposuction removes fat and creates a new contour. Renuvion then helps the skin adapt to that contour instead of settling loosely over it.
The sequence is simple:
No additional incisions are needed. Renuvion uses the same access points as the liposuction, so it doesn’t add scars.
Renuvion works best for patients who are planning liposuction and want the smoothest, firmest skin possible afterward. Good candidates typically:
Skin quality varies from person to person. Age, sun exposure, weight changes, and pregnancy all affect how much elasticity the skin has left. During your consultation, Dr. Parikh examines the skin in each area you’d like treated and lets you know whether Renuvion is likely to help, and how much.
Skin tightening is the most unpredictable part of liposuction body contouring. A surgeon can remove fat with precision, but whether the skin retracts well afterward depends on the patient. Renuvion is one of the few tools that lets a surgeon influence that outcome directly. Dr. Parikh includes it because it gives patients their best chance at maximum skin tightening, and with it, their best chance at the result they’re hoping for.
Renuvion can be added to most liposuction procedures at ShineMD, including:
It also pairs well with fat transfer procedures. When liposuction is used to harvest fat for a Brazilian butt lift or breast augmentation with fat transfer, Renuvion can be applied to the donor areas to help the skin there tighten as well.
Renuvion is performed at the same time as your liposuction, so your experience will follow the plan you and Dr. Parikh set for the liposuction itself.
Renuvion can be performed under tumescent local anesthesia or general anesthesia. With tumescent anesthesia, the treatment area is numbed with a diluted local anesthetic solution and you stay awake during the procedure. With general anesthesia, you are asleep throughout. Dr. Parikh reviews both options with you and helps you choose based on the areas being treated, your comfort level, and your medical history.
Awake procedures under tumescent anesthesia are performed in our Houston office. Procedures under general anesthesia take place at a certified surgery center. Both settings are equipped for liposuction with Renuvion, and the choice usually comes down to patient preference and the scope of the procedure.
Renuvion adds about 15 to 20 minutes per treated area. For a single area such as the abdomen or arms, that’s a short addition. For lipo 360, which covers the abdomen, flanks, and lower back, Renuvion may add 30 to 45 minutes to the total procedure time.
Adding Renuvion to liposuction does not lengthen your recovery. You can expect the same timeline you would for liposuction alone, with a return to light activity within a few days and to more strenuous exercise as Dr. Parikh clears you.
Renuvion may actually make recovery a little easier. Dr. Parikh has found that it reduces bruising compared with liposuction alone. For patients having fat grafting to the buttocks or breasts, it can also improve how well the transferred fat survives, which supports the final result.
Standard liposuction aftercare still applies. Most patients wear a compression garment for several weeks to control swelling and help the skin settle. Swelling improves gradually over the first few weeks, and the treated areas continue to refine for several months as swelling resolves and new collagen forms. Our office provides detailed post-op instructions and follows up with you throughout your recovery.
Some tightening is visible soon after the procedure, once the initial swelling starts to go down. The skin can continue to firm up over the following three to six months as the body produces new collagen in response to the treatment.
It helps to be clear about the limits. Renuvion improves skin tightening. It does not replace a surgical lift, and it can’t remove skin. For patients with significant excess skin, a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thigh lift will produce a more dramatic change. Renuvion is the right tool when the skin has enough elasticity left to respond, and Dr. Parikh will tell you honestly which category you fall into.
The most common risk of Renuvion is disappointment if the skin doesn’t tighten as much as you hoped. Because skin response varies, no surgeon can promise a specific degree of tightening, and Dr. Parikh discusses realistic expectations before surgery.
A less common risk is a skin burn from the energy delivered beneath the surface. The current generation of Renuvion technology has significantly reduced this risk through better control of energy delivery and cooling. Other risks are the standard risks of liposuction, including swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, and contour irregularities, all of which are reviewed with you in detail during your consultation.
Dr. Parikh is a double board-certified plastic surgeon, certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He completed his plastic surgery residency at Houston Methodist Hospital and brings years of complex surgical training to every body contouring procedure he performs.
Because Renuvion is added to liposuction rather than performed on its own, the cost depends on the number of areas treated, whether the procedure is done under local or general anesthesia, and the facility used. You’ll receive a complete quote at your consultation once Dr. Parikh has reviewed your goals and examined the areas you’d like treated. ShineMD Plastic Surgery offers financing options to help make body contouring more manageable.
Dr. Parikh’s approach to liposuction favors natural, proportionate results over dramatic or artificial-looking ones. Renuvion fits that philosophy. Rather than accepting loose skin as the unavoidable trade-off of fat removal, he uses it to give patients a smoother, more finished contour. Each plan is built around the patient’s anatomy, skin quality, and goals, with safety and symmetry as priorities.
If you’re considering liposuction and want the best chance at smooth, firm skin afterward, Renuvion may be part of the answer. Contact ShineMD Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation with Dr. Janak Parikh and find out whether Renuvion is right for your plan.
Yes. Both names refer to the same helium plasma technology from Apyx Medical. Renuvion is the actual name of the technology and J-Plasma is what it is commonly known as.
Yes, Renuvion can be done without liposuction if loose skin is the predominant issue. However, most patients benefit from a combination of Renuvion and liposuction.
Renuvion uses the same small incisions as your liposuction, so it doesn’t add any new scars.
It varies. Patients with mild to moderate laxity and reasonable skin elasticity usually see a noticeable improvement. Patients with significant excess skin may not tighten enough and may be better served by a surgical lift. Dr. Parikh will give you a realistic assessment at your consultation.
Some tightening is apparent in the first few weeks as swelling goes down. The skin can continue to improve for three to six months as new collagen develops.
The procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, so you won’t feel it. Afterward, discomfort is similar to what you’d expect from liposuction alone and is managed with the medication Dr. Parikh prescribes.
